(More customer reviews)Vehicle owned: 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 equipped with fog lights.
Problem: Poor illumination using stock headlamp assemblies with stock or upgraded halogen bulbs. Problem exacerbated during rain. Wet, glossy road surface reflects oncoming traffic light and is blinding. Wife (no lie she did it this time) hit a deer a few years back that cracked open the lens on one of the headlamps and over the years the chrome paint on faceted reflector chipped off and compounded problem.
Research: Read numerous forums to learn many other Ram owners complained of poor headlight performance and the solutions they chose. Many experimented by replacing stock bulbs with various others and reported satisfactory improvements depending on which bulb was selected. One forum participant tried at least three different bulbs before investing in replacement headlamp assemblies and converting to HID. He reported it was the ultimate in brightness compared to everything else he had tried. I eliminated HID upgrade because of cost and added components required.
Solution: I chose ANZO USA headlamp assemblies. I called ANZO customer support to determine which type would yield greatest brightness and was told the crystal rather than the projector. A number of the forum participants were happy with the increased brightness produced using Sylvania Silverstar Ultra bulbs so I added that to my order.
Install and adjustment: I installed both ANZO headlamps within 30 minutes after inserting Silverstar Ultra bulbs. Vertical adjustment screw is accessible after hood is open. Horizontal screw is below and along forward edge of headlamp easily reached with screwdriver just back from top surface of bumper.
Results: I discovered during adjustments that horizontal adjustment on passenger side headlamp malfunctioned. A number of feet to right of road shoulder was brightly illuminated while a region deficient in light encompassed an area of about 3 feet to the left of the white line separating the shoulder from the roadway. Proper vertical and horizontal adjustments after receiving replacement headlamp yield a rectangular region of bright white light with no dark areas within. Illuminated region width extends just beyond outer edge of shoulders and depth using low beam projects approximately 80 feet with illumination fading quickly beyond. High beam projects many hundreds of feet with no dark areas within beam region. Best objective method I can offer to compare beam brightness before and after is to compare difference between 60 and 220 lumen flashlights for those like me addicted to possessing ever brighter flashlights. Beam completely fills region with bright light and projects beam much farther. Cuts through fog and increases visibility immensely during rainy nights by countering light reflections from oncoming traffic on wet road surface. I don't know how much of the improvement can be attributed to ANZO headlamps and how much to Silverstar Ultra bulbs.
Price: Local auto parts store quoted msrp plus shipping costs to special order ANZO headlamp pair. Walmart sells Sylvania Silverstar Ultra bulbs for $49. Amazon prices with free shipping was best deal for me.
Amazon customer service: Excellent! I posted my complaint on amazon.com one late night. Next day I received email confirming shipment of replacement headlamp. Headlamp was delivered following day via UPS next day.
